The PBscience team recently contributed to the book Performance Cycling: the Science of Success, edited by Dr James Hopker and Dr Simon Jobson. Dan and Helen co-authored a chapter entitled Training with heart rate and power while Helen also contributed a chapter on Coach-athlete relationships. If you want to learn more about the PBscience coaching philosophy this is a good place to start.

fixed-length-plans-can-help-prepare-for-that-big-race-goalBuying a fixed length training plan is a great way for an athlete to train using a structured, experience and evidence led approach. We have a whole range of tried and tested training plans in our Training Peaks plans library but if you really want to get the most out of your training then one of our bespoke plans allows us to construct a plan based around your individual circumstances to best suit your particular event.

The starting point is an in depth phone or skype call to find out as much information about you and your sporting background as possible. Some of the key points for discussion are:

  • Targets - what event are you training for and what do you hope to achieve. Goal setting is a vital part of the process so we'll make sure we begin with a clear endpoint for the plan
  • Training history - what is your background in the sport? The plan we write for an experienced athlete with several seasons under their belt is very different to that we'd write for a first time novice!
  • Available time - absolutely crucial! Any training plan has to be realistic, we'll have a frank discussion on how much time and what days you have to train. We'll always encourage you not to over-estimate your freetime in this scenario. Better to plan at 80% of ful capacity and hit every session rather than constantly be fighting to squeeze sessions in. We do include some flexibility in our plans though so you have the information to make an informed decision if you have to do less than planned or more.
  • Lifestyle - what other factors will prevent you following the plan? If you have non-cycling holidays booked or periods where work or childcare becomes difficult then we can plan around these times.

£75 per 12 week plan*

* If you have more or less than 12 weeks until your event than please email Dan for a quote. Stringing consecutive plans together is a very effective way to prepare for an event as we can take what we learned from the first plan and refine the structure and session choice for the final build up to your event.

Why not add an exercise test?

Team in the labEstablishing your current fitness using a lab test will help us understand your strengths and weaknesses, and therefore the best training for you in the coming 12 weeks. You will also have training zones to make your training the most effective it can be...

The process:

  1. An exercise test to establish both sub-maximal (lactate threshold) and maximal (VO2 max) abilities. At this visit, you will also have an initial consultation with the sport scientist to talk about your performance aims and aspirations. The discussion will also help to provide the  background on your training history and lifestyle essential to optimising the plan (the total visit is approximately 3 hours).
  2. Within a week of your test, you will have a full set of your results, and a report on your physiological profile. This report will also include your training zones and all the information you need to understand how to carry out the cycle training plan.
  3. After you have read the report, there may be a need for some more discussion (via phone or email). You will then receive a 12 week training programme tailored to YOUR needs and the event you are preparing for.
